Optoelectronics Projects

At Sol Ideas, we have applied over 20 years of experience in optoelectronics for the benefit of our customers. Our projects include

Optoelectronics of Solar Cells

Greg P. Smestad’s book Optoelectronics of Solar Cells provides an overview for those in the fields of optics and optical engineering, as well as those who are interested in energy policy, economics, and the requirements for efficient photo-to-electric energy conversion. This book can be ordered online.

Light Emitting Diode Optics

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are increasingly being used to replace energy wasting incandescent bulbs in applications ranging from automotive signaling to residential lighting. Sol Ideas founder, Greg P. Smestad, was a pioneer in the use of non-imaging optics used in solar concentrators. For LEDs, he reversed the design to efficiently bring light from the chip to viewer. This led to several patents and practical applications.

These designs inspired products being sold today. They can also serve as inspiration for next generation photovoltaic concentrator solar cell package designs.

UV Waterworks Safety Shut-Off

Dr. Smestad designed and prototyped a UV detector and housing for a safety shut-off on the UV Waterworks water purification system for Waterhealth International. This allows for an efficient, affordable water disinfection device that uses ultraviolet light to disable bacteria and viruses in drinking water, making it safe to drink. The patented UV detector/controller ensures that water will be sterilized only when there is sufficient UV irradiance. This unit assists in providing drinkable water at low cost in developing and developed nations.
